An internist focuses on adult health. The role includes prevention, evaluating new concerns and managing ongoing conditions together.
One place to connect the pieces
Internal medicine physicians are trained to care for adults across a broad range of conditions. Some focus on a subspecialty; general internists often serve as primary care doctors. “Internist” does not mean a doctor in internship.
If you see several clinicians, a useful primary care conversation is not just “How is each condition?” It is also “How do the plans fit together?” Bring the names of your specialists and what changed at your last appointments.
Use the appointment to close open loops
Try a short “still waiting on” list. This is an organizational tool, not a way to decide which tests or treatment you need.
- A test was ordered, but I am unsure where to complete it.
- A specialist changed a medicine, and my other list still shows the old instructions.
- I left the hospital with a follow-up recommendation but no appointment.
- I received a result and do not understand the next step.
Specialists and primary care have complementary roles
Ask who is responsible for each next step. For example: who should receive an outside report, who will discuss it with you and who should answer a medication question? Your internist can help decide whether specialist input is appropriate for a particular concern.
Do not cancel specialist follow-up because you have a primary care appointment. Bring that appointment information and ask how the two visits should connect.
